Jim Bishop
Professor Jim Bishop was appointed inaugural Executive Director of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in 2011. He also holds the academic positions of Herman Chair of Cancer Medicine, University of Melbourne and Professor of Medicine, University of Sydney.
Professor Bishop is Chair of the Cancer Research Advisory Committee VCCC, Chair of the Cancer Australia Advisory Board, Chair, Cancer Monitoring Advisory Committee, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and member, Scientific Committee of the International Agency for Research in Cancer, Lyon.
Previous to his current role, Professor Bishop was the Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Government, a post which he held from 2009. Prior to this he was founding Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Institute New South Wales and founding Chief Cancer Officer for New South Wales. Other positions held in NSW include Deputy Director General, Director of Population Health, Chief Health Officer, NSW Health Department, Director of Cancer Services, Central Sydney Area Health Service and founding Director of the Sydney Cancer Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.
Professor Bishop graduated from the University of Melbourne in Medicine and subsequently was awarded an MD and a Master of Medicine by research thesis from the University. Professor Bishop was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study medical oncology at the US National Cancer Institute, Bethesda and Baltimore MD. He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland. Following his return to Australia from the USA, Professor Bishop worked as a clinical haematologist and medical oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Alfred Hospital and founded the Division of Haematology and Medical Oncology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In 2008, he was awarded the title Officer, Order of Australia (AO) for his services to Australian cancer research and cancer services. He has published over 250 peer reviewed publications and research reports and developed over 50 mass media public health campaigns.
